I have spent more than twenty years around UK businesses and the technology they depend on, and the greater part of that time has been inside architecture, engineering and construction practices. Design studios do not work like other offices. A central model that will not open an hour before a client presentation, a render that quietly misses a competition deadline, a project folder nobody entirely trusts — those are not IT irritations. They are commercial risks with a date attached.

That is why WIT has stayed deliberately specialist rather than drifting into being another general helpdesk. We would far rather understand Revit, heavyweight project data and the rhythm of a project programme properly than know a little about everything. Get that right and technology stops being something your team has to think about at all, which leaves good people free to design and deliver good buildings. That is the standard we set ourselves, and the one I would encourage you to hold us to.

We think it is only fair to be open about this. WIT uses a small, deliberately chosen set of business-grade AI tools internally, mainly to speed up documentation and routine work. The rules we apply to ourselves are the ones we recommend to you: a person is always in the loop, AI never makes a decision about your systems or your data on its own, anything that reaches you has been reviewed by one of our engineers, and confidential client information does not go into public AI tools. Our story

Grown through word of mouth, since 2013

WIT was established in 2013 and has since grown to become one of the leading providers of IT services to the AEC sector in the UK. Our services are informed by a deep knowledge of the industries we serve, an active approach to technical R&D, a genuine empathy for our clients and a strategic balancing of good system design and responsive support.

We develop strong and lasting relationships with our clients and have grown over the years through positive word of mouth and a sensible scaling of our team to maintain a high level of service provision.

WIT and Inevidesk

WIT were closely involved in the beta testing and early customer adoption of Inevidesk, the leading AEC virtual workstation platform, and WIT’s founders were co-founders of the platform. We continue to provide expert deployment and support of this service to many practices.

Inevidesk’s independently developed, virtualised GPU-accelerated resources deliver true workstation performance to power users in any industry. WIT designs, deploys and supports these systems for AEC teams: workstations, rendering or private AI models, Inevidesk is built to deliver.

Flexibility

Virtualised resources mean the necessary performance is available at the right place and the right time. WIT configures and manages that flexibility around your project cycles, directing powerful GPU compute where and when it is needed.

Cost control

High-performance virtualised GPU compute has historically been difficult to control or prohibitive in cost. Inevidesk breaks that paradigm, and WIT helps you plan, right-size and manage it. Controlled performance. Controlled cost.

Hardware

Inevidesk is provided via custom-built pods designed to meet specific requirements. Each pod contains a pool of high-performance resources: GPUs, CPU, RAM and storage, configurable for different use cases. WIT specifies, deploys and supports these pods for practices of every size.

Single hosted virtual workstations are also available on a monthly or annual commitment via the Flex service, with WIT handling setup and day-to-day support.

Software

Inevidesk is built on open-source foundations for maximum control of performance and continual evolution of the service. No big-tech software dependencies means freedom of action and sovereign control are preserved.

WIT supports these systems in daily production, backed by our own open-source and Linux expertise.

Location

Deployment is flexible: Inevidesk slots into existing on-premises or datacentre environments, or services can be hosted in a UK Level 4 datacentre alongside centralised infrastructure with Inevicloud services.

WIT helps you choose the right location for your practice and manages the environment wherever it lives.

Every ticket is given a priority when it reaches us, and you can see it in the portal. The table below is how we categorise requests; the response times that actually apply to your practice are the ones set out in your agreement with WIT.

Your IT shouldn’t become another project risk

By the time an IT problem reaches a director in an architecture practice, it has usually stopped being an IT problem. It arrives as a delay, a resourcing question, or an awkward call with a client. These are the ones we are asked about most.

  • Revit slows to a crawl by mid-afternoon

    Sync times creep from seconds to minutes and everyone assumes the machines are past it. More often it is a central model that has grown without housekeeping, an over-linked file, warnings left to accumulate, or too much distance between the model and the person editing it.

  • Project files that take longer to open than to review

    Point clouds, federated Navisworks models and eight years of consultant issues in one folder tree. Storage sized for a practice half your size, and a backup window that no longer fits inside the working day.

  • Remote working that only half works

    Worksharing is unusually sensitive to latency rather than bandwidth. A connection that streams video flawlessly can still make a central model sync painful, which is why “our broadband is fine” and “Revit is unusable from home” are both true at once.

  • VPN as the answer to everything

    A tunnel back to the office solves email and file access, then quietly fails the one workload that matters most. Practices often end up putting live models on consumer file-sync tools instead, which Autodesk advises against for exactly this reason.

  • Workstations bought on the wrong specification

    Revit leans on single-thread performance for much of what it does. CPU rendering wants cores. Enscape and Twinmotion want the GPU. One identical build for the whole studio overspends on some desks and starves others.

  • Licensing that nobody owns

    Named-user Autodesk seats, Adobe assignments, Rhino and Vectorworks keys, and a leaver from March who still holds a licence. It surfaces at renewal, usually in the same week as a deadline.

  • Security that arrives as a client questionnaire

    Drawings, fee data and client correspondence are worth having, and construction payment chains are a known target for invoice redirection. For most practices the practical trigger is a PQQ asking what controls you hold.

  • Mobilising a project faster than IT can move

    Three contract technologists start Monday. Each needs a workstation, the right licences, and access to that project and nothing else. Raised as three separate tickets, it takes a week you do not have.

A model that takes four minutes to sync is almost never one thing. It is a chain, and the slowest link is usually not the one people blame. That is why we diagnose before quoting hardware — and why hardware might not be your Revit problem, or the choice between virtual desktops and high-end workstations, are worth reading before you spend.

One afternoon

What happens at 4:30pm before a submission?

Every practice has had this afternoon. The drawing set is nearly out, three people are still working in the model, and the client portal closes at six.

  1. 16:12

    A technologist's Revit session stops responding part-way through a sync. The central model is now holding a lock that belongs to a session which no longer exists.

  2. 16:20

    Two more people cannot sync. Their morning's work is in local files and the drawing set is not complete. Somebody starts a WhatsApp group.

  3. 16:28

    A ticket goes in. Someone else phones, because a ticket does not feel like enough.

  4. 16:35

    This is the moment the two versions of your IT diverge. The technical fix is the same in both. What differs is whether anyone at the other end already knows that today is a submission day.

  5. 17:10

    One version has replied asking for a screenshot and confirmed a four-hour response target. The other has cleared the stale lock, checked who else is blocked, and is watching the export.

  6. 18:00

    One practice sends the submission. The other starts drafting an email about an extension, and someone begins working out what a missed planning date costs.

If IT is a ticket queue

The response is procedurally correct and commercially useless. Priority is assigned on symptoms, the engineer starts from zero because nobody holds context about your practice, and the four-hour target is met at 20:35. Every step is defensible. The submission still misses.

If IT knows the submission date

The date was in the calendar before the week started. Change and update windows were moved away from it. The engineer who picks up knows where your central model lives and what a held lock looks like. The fix takes eleven minutes because the diagnosis took thirty seconds.

The engineering in both columns is nearly identical. Everything that separates them happened before 16:12 — in whether anyone at the other end of the phone knew the date mattered.

Frequently asked questions

How much does IT support for an architecture practice cost?

Managed IT is normally priced per user per month, so the honest answer depends on headcount and scope. What moves the number in a design practice is rarely the headcount itself: it is whether you run your own servers or work entirely in the cloud, how much project data you hold and how far back you must keep it, whether workstations and design software licensing sit inside the agreement, and how many offices need covering. Ask every provider to quote the same scope so you can compare like with like, and ask specifically what falls outside the monthly fee. Project work, hardware, third-party licences and out-of-hours cover are the usual exclusions, and they are where quotes stop being comparable.

What should architects look for in an IT support company?

Ask questions a generalist cannot answer well. Where would you host our central model, and why? What do you specify differently for someone in Revit all day compared with someone running Enscape? How do you handle Autodesk named-user licences when three contract staff join for one job? What would you do differently in the week before a planning submission? You are testing whether they understand that your files are large, your software is unusual and your deadlines are contractual. Then ask two practical questions: who actually answers the phone, and will the engineers in this meeting be the ones picking up our tickets.

Can WIT support Revit and BIM environments?

Yes, and it is the core of what we do. That covers where the central model lives and how it performs, worksharing and sync times, linked and federated models, Navisworks coordination, and the storage and network underneath all of it. It also covers the unglamorous parts: keeping Revit versions consistent across a project team, scheduling updates so they do not land mid-submission, and making sure a restore produces a working central model rather than a file that opens with errors. If model performance is your immediate problem, we would treat that as a diagnosis job first, because the cause is frequently not the workstation.

Can you support Vectorworks and Rhino?

Yes. Mixed environments are normal in London practices: Revit for delivery, Rhino and Grasshopper for concept and geometry, Vectorworks in studios that never moved to Autodesk, and usually SketchUp and AutoCAD alongside. We support the environment those applications depend on, which is where most problems actually sit: workstation specification, graphics drivers, licensing and licence servers, reference and resource file performance, and the exchange formats that carry work between them. We are a support specialist rather than a reseller for the design applications, so we will tell you when something is a genuine software limitation rather than a setting we can change.

Can you support Mac and Windows environments?

Yes, and mixed estates are common in design studios: Windows workstations for delivery, Macs across visualisation and graphics, and a practice manager who needs both to reach the same files and printers. We manage them alongside each other, covering device management and updates, Microsoft 365 on macOS, endpoint protection, backup, and single sign-on so nobody is maintaining two sets of credentials. One honest caveat is application-led rather than ours: Revit does not run natively on macOS. If a Mac user needs Revit we will talk to you about a virtual desktop or a Windows machine rather than pretend there is a neat answer.

Can you take over from our existing IT provider?

Yes, and it is most of the work we onboard. The sequence matters more than the speed. We document what you have, identify what is missing (usually backup coverage, administrative account control and licensing records), agree a cut-over that avoids your submission dates, then transfer administrative control of your Microsoft 365 tenant, domains, licences and any on-premise systems. The part practices most often overlook is administrative ownership: if your outgoing provider holds the global admin account or your domain registration, that needs resolving early rather than on the night. We will also tell you plainly where your current setup should be kept.

Can you help improve Revit performance?

Usually, but it starts with establishing what is actually slow, because sync time, open time, view navigation and rendering all have different causes. The ones we find most often are central models that have grown without housekeeping, over-linked files, accumulated warnings, latency between the model and the person editing it, storage that cannot keep up with the read pattern, and workstations specified without regard to Revit's reliance on single-thread performance for much of its work. Some of those are configuration, some are hardware, and some are model hygiene that belongs with your BIM lead rather than with IT. We will be straight with you about which is which.

Do architecture practices need specialist cyber security?

They need proportionate security, and the reason is commercial rather than dramatic. A practice holds drawings and models, client and site information, fee and tender data, and correspondence that carries professional liability for years after handover. Construction payment chains are also an established target for invoice redirection fraud. In practice the trigger for most practices is a client questionnaire or a framework bid asking what controls are in place. The controls themselves are not exotic: multi-factor authentication everywhere, sensible conditional access, endpoint protection, backups you have tested, access granted per project, and staff who know what to do with a suspicious email.

Can you support multiple offices and remote workers?

Yes. The real design questions are where project data lives and how far it sits from the people editing it. A second office, or someone at home on a fast connection, can still have a poor experience with a central model, because worksharing is sensitive to latency rather than bandwidth. Depending on your setup, that points towards a different model host, a virtual desktop approach so the workstation sits next to the data, or Autodesk's cloud collaboration tools. We work through the trade-offs with you on cost, performance and how your teams actually share work, rather than applying the same answer to every practice.

How quickly can an architecture practice change IT providers?

For a typical London practice, a well-run transition takes a few weeks from decision to cut-over, and most of that is documentation and preparation rather than downtime. The cut-over itself is usually a single evening or weekend. The realistic constraints are your notice period with your current provider, whether administrative control of your Microsoft 365 tenant and domain can be handed over cleanly, and your own project calendar, because we would not move a practice during submission week. If your situation is urgent, say so. The sequence can be compressed, but that should be a deliberate decision rather than an accident.

Cyber Essentials is the UK government-backed certification that more and more clients and frameworks expect design and construction businesses to hold. Here is what it covers, why it matters and how to approach it without disrupting project work.

Cyber Essentials focuses on five technical control areas: firewalls and internet gateways, secure configuration of devices and software, access control, malware protection, and keeping software up to date.

None of these are exotic. The value of the scheme is that it forces an honest audit of the basics, the unpatched machine in the corner of the studio, the shared admin password, the ex-employee account that was never disabled.

Cyber Essentials vs Cyber Essentials Plus

The standard certification is based on a self-assessment questionnaire, verified by a licensed certification body. Cyber Essentials Plus covers the same controls but adds independent technical testing of your systems.

For many practices, standard certification is the sensible starting point, with Plus considered when client requirements or risk profile justify it.

How AEC firms should approach it

The biggest mistake is treating certification as a one-off paperwork exercise. The questionnaire reflects the real state of your estate, so the work is in tidying that estate: building an accurate asset list, closing down legacy accounts, standardising device configuration and getting patching under control.

Done properly, the process leaves you with a better-managed, better-documented IT environment, the certificate is almost a by-product.

Revit Running Slowly? Why Your Hardware Might Not Be the Problem

When Revit slows down, the instinct is to buy faster workstations. But in our experience, model health, storage, networking and worksharing setup are just as often the real culprits, and cheaper to fix.

Few things generate IT tickets in an architecture practice like a sluggish Revit model the week before a submission. The instinctive diagnosis is usually hardware: the machines are old, so the fix must be new ones.

Sometimes that is true. But before a practice commits to a round of workstation spending, it is worth checking the factors that just as often govern real-world Revit performance.

Model health comes first

Heavily-detailed families, unpurged models, excessive design options, imported CAD geometry and sprawling warnings lists all drag performance down regardless of the hardware underneath.

A model audit, purging unused elements, reviewing warnings, rationalising families and splitting oversized models, frequently recovers more speed than a hardware refresh, at a fraction of the cost.

Storage and network are the hidden bottleneck

Worksharing performance depends heavily on where the central model lives and how fast every workstation can reach it. Ageing file servers, congested switches and Wi-Fi-connected workstations all show up as “Revit being slow”.

Synchronise-with-central times are a useful diagnostic: if they vary wildly across the office, the problem is usually infrastructure rather than individual machines.

When hardware genuinely is the answer

Revit is largely single-threaded for day-to-day modelling, so a smaller number of fast cores beats a large number of slow ones, and plentiful memory matters for big models. Rendering and point-cloud work shift the balance towards GPU.

Virtual workstations change the economics again: platforms like Inevidesk let practices provision GPU-accelerated performance per project rather than per desk, which suits fluctuating team sizes.

The right answer starts with measurement rather than assumption, and that is a conversation worth having before the purchase orders go out.

Microsoft 365 for Architecture Practices: Five Setup Mistakes to Avoid

Most practices run Microsoft 365, but few run it well. These are the configuration mistakes we see most often when reviewing AEC tenants, and what good looks like instead.

Microsoft 365 is close to universal in the AEC sector, but a licence is not a configuration. When we review tenants for new clients, the same handful of problems appear again and again, most of them invisible until they cause a security incident or a data-loss headache.

1. Multi-factor authentication left optional

Compromised passwords remain the most common way into a business. If MFA is not enforced for every account, including partners and directors, who are the most valuable targets, the tenant is one convincing phishing email away from trouble.

2. SharePoint sprawl with no information architecture

Project collaboration works dramatically better when there is a deliberate structure: consistent project site templates, sensible permissions inheritance and a naming convention that matches how the practice actually numbers projects.

Without that, practices end up with hundreds of ad-hoc sites, duplicated documents and permissions nobody can explain.

3. No retention or backup strategy

Microsoft operates the service, but responsibility for your data remains yours. Retention policies, versioning settings and third-party backup should be deliberate decisions, not defaults, particularly for practices with contractual document-retention obligations.

4. Everyone is an administrator

Global admin rights accumulate over time and rarely get removed. Admin access should be limited, role-based and protected with the strongest authentication available, attackers who land an admin account own the entire tenant.

5. Licensing bought once and never reviewed

Practices change size and shape; licence assignments usually do not. An annual review of plans against actual usage regularly recovers meaningful budget, and often reveals security features already being paid for but not switched on.

A well-run tenant is not a project, it is a discipline. That is exactly what a specialist managed service is for.

Backup vs Business Continuity: What AEC Leaders Need to Know

Having backups is not the same as being able to keep working. Understanding the difference, and knowing your real recovery times, is one of the most valuable conversations a practice can have before anything goes wrong.

“We have backups” is one of the most dangerous sentences in business technology, because it is usually where the conversation stops. The questions that matter come next: backups of what, tested when, restorable how fast, and what does the practice do while the restore is running?

Backup is a copy; continuity is a plan

Backup answers the question “is our data safe?”. Business continuity answers “can we keep working?”, which involves people, communications, alternative ways of accessing systems and a clear order of priorities, not just data.

A practice can have flawless backups and still lose a week of production because nobody planned how sixty people would actually work while systems were rebuilt.

Two numbers every director should know

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is how long you can afford to be down. Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is how much recent work you can afford to lose. Neither is an IT decision, they are business decisions with cost implications, and IT builds to whatever targets leadership sets.

For deadline-driven AEC work, the honest answers are often more demanding than the current setup can deliver. Better to discover that in a planning meeting than mid-incident.

Test like you mean it

An untested backup is a hope, not a control. Restores should be tested regularly and realistically, including full-scale scenarios such as recovering a project server or a Microsoft 365 site, timed against your stated RTO.

Layered protection matters too: at least one backup copy should be off-site and isolated from your production credentials, so an attacker who compromises the network cannot also destroy the backups.

Phishing and Payment Fraud in Construction: How the Attacks Really Happen

Construction and design projects move large sums between many parties on tight schedules, exactly the conditions payment fraud thrives on. Understanding the playbook is the first step to defeating it.

The attacks that do real financial damage to AEC businesses are rarely sophisticated technical exploits. They are confidence tricks executed over email, aimed at the moments when money moves: valuations, stage payments, retentions and supplier invoices.

The classic pattern: invoice redirection

An attacker compromises or convincingly imitates a supplier, subcontractor or even the practice itself, then sends a plausible email announcing new bank details shortly before a genuine payment is due.

Because the projects, names and amounts are real, often gleaned from a compromised mailbox that the attacker has quietly read for weeks, the request looks routine. The money leaves, and by the time anyone reconciles, it is gone.

Why AEC is targeted

Project-based industries make ideal targets: many counterparties, regular large payments, time pressure and email as the default channel for financial instructions. A live project generates exactly the context an attacker needs to sound legitimate.

Defences that actually work

Process beats technology for this threat: any change of bank details should be verified by phone on a known number, without exception, including when the request appears to come from your own directors.

Technical controls still matter: enforced multi-factor authentication, mailbox-rule monitoring and modern email filtering close off the account compromises that make the fraud convincing in the first place.

Finally, staff awareness training turns your team from the attack surface into the alarm system. People who have seen the playbook spot it.

VDI or High-End Workstations? Choosing the Right Model for Design Teams

Physical workstations and virtual desktops both have a place in AEC. The right choice depends on how your teams, projects and offices actually work, here is a practical framework for deciding.

For years the question did not exist: design work needed a powerful machine under the desk, and that was that. GPU-accelerated virtual desktop platforms, including Inevidesk, which WIT’s founders co-founded, have made it a genuine choice. Neither answer is universally right.

Where physical workstations still win

A fixed team, working from one studio, on stable long-term workloads remains well served by physical machines: maximum performance per pound at the desk, no dependency on connectivity, and a hardware lifecycle the practice already understands.

Where VDI changes the game

Virtual desktops earn their keep when work is distributed orfluctuating: hybrid teams needing full Revit capability from home, freelancers and contractors who must be productive on day one, international project teams, and practices that scale up and down with project cycles.

Centralising data also simplifies security and backup: models never leave the data centre, which removes an entire category of endpoint risk.

The honest trade-offs

VDI depends on decent connectivity, and the platform choice matters enormously, general-purpose cloud VDI has historically disappointed AEC firms on GPU performance and cost. Sector-specific platforms exist precisely because of that gap.

Many practices land on a hybrid estate: physical workstations for anchor desks, virtual desks for flexibility. The right mix is a design exercise, and it starts with how your people actually work.

AI tools are arriving in design and construction workflows faster than policies can keep up. A short, practical governance framework protects your IP and clients without slowing experimentation.

AI-assisted tools are already inside most practices, whether leadership has sanctioned them or not: drafting text, summarising documents, generating imagery, writing scripts. The productivity upside is real. So is the governance gap.

The risks specific to AEC

Design practices trade on intellectual property and client confidentiality. Pasting project information, client details or unreleased designs into consumer AI tools may transfer that material outside your control, in ways that can conflict with client agreements and data-protection obligations.

Accuracy matters too: AI output that looks authoritative still needs professional review before it informs a design decision, a specification or a contractual document.

What a proportionate policy covers

Good AI policies are short. They name the approved tools and accounts, define what data may and may not be entered, require human review of outputs used in deliverables, and give staff a clear route to request new tools rather than adopting them quietly.

Pair the policy with sanctioned, business-grade tools so the compliant path is also the convenient one, shadow AI thrives where the official answer is simply “no”.

Governance as an enabler

Handled well, governance accelerates adoption: staff experiment confidently inside known guardrails, clients get credible answers about how their data is handled, and the practice builds an honest picture of where AI genuinely helps.

Co-Managed IT: When One Internal IT Person Is No Longer Enough

Growing practices often reach a point where a single IT manager cannot cover support, projects, security and strategy alone. Co-managed IT keeps their knowledge while adding depth, without the disruption of replacing them.

Many AEC businesses grow into the same bottleneck: one capable IT person who has been there for years, knows everything, and is now expected to be helpdesk, project engineer, security officer and strategist simultaneously. Holidays become risky. Big projects stall. Nobody sleeps well.

The problem is structure, not the person

A single individual, however good, cannot provide cover, breadth and progression at once. The choice is usually framed as “hire more staff or outsource everything”, but both options discard something valuable: either budget efficiency or hard-won internal knowledge.

How co-managed arrangements work

Co-managed IT splits responsibilities deliberately. Typically the internal team keeps what they are best at, often user-facing support and institutional knowledge, while the partner provides monitoring, escalation engineering, project capacity, security operations and strategic input.

The internal IT manager gains a deep bench behind them, cover when they are away, and specialists to call on, rather than a competitor for their role.

Making it succeed

Clear boundaries are everything: documented ownership of each responsibility, shared tooling and ticketing, and honest reporting to leadership from both sides.
